Today I saw a post in a forum which said that it was only older people who cared about writing grammatically. It went on to say that nowadays it’s quite OK to use its instead of it’s and that lots of newspapers nowadays do this.
All I can say is that I’ve never seen a newspaper deliberately use its instead of it’s. When they do, it’s a typo. If you doubt what I say, check on various newspapers’ style guides available online.
Why is it so difficult to remember? It’s means it is – simple. The apostrophe indicates a missing letter in this case the i of is.
The whole point of grammar is to allow you to write in such a way that it is easily understandable. Bad grammar can make it difficult or impossible for a reader to understand what you are trying to say. Even if your meaning does come over, bad grammar and spelling will make some readers trust you less. If you can’t bother to get these right, they will wonder if what you are saying is correct? Could you be bothered to do your research?
